Printables: Dover

dover_guineapigsDover’s weekly newsletters are indispensable for worksheets, coloring pages, and clip art. I particularly love that they provide a range of content that is unusual and yet still relevant. The teachers’ sampler includes grades PK-12; the children’s sampler has content up to 5th grade or so, and the design sampler includes more clip art.

Printables: Mini Books

Excerpt from The Hard Stuff: All About Bones, (Level R)

Each month Learning Page offers two printable mini-books from their sister site, Reading A-Z. These are accessible from the home page, and can only be downloaded that month. Two extra good ones this month – All about Bones and Animal Skeletons.  Most selections use guided reading levels as an indication of their grade level.

Printables: Charts and Graphs

learningpage_chartLearning Page
Worksheets from Learning Page are excellent, and I’ve praised them before. This time I’m stopping in to mention that I’m particularly grateful for their excellent charts and pictograms. It’s probably my inner librarian coming out, but I think learning to read graphs and charts is an invaluable skill, and it’s well within the reach of young children. Learning Page includes such variety and high quality of graphs of charts that I have stopped bothering to look anywhere else. At left, a pie chart and questions on “How Alicia Spent Her Summer” from Jurassic July, Summer 2008. Giving them your email address is well worth it to access these useful goodies.

Draft: Montessori for Everyone

Lori points out that my original post for Montessori for Everyone really isn’t very accurrate.

Montessori for Everyone is a high-caliber resource in an area which is off the beaten path of most printable sites. Many have full-color photos which are lovely, in traditional montessori style, and yet use modern technology to full advantage.

Exceptional, colorful printables that stand out from the crowd. Many have full-color photos which are lovely and yet modern. “Animal Families” shows an adult male, adult female, and animal young for four different species; “Whole and Half Fruits” (shown) is ideal for both fractions and plant studies. mfeveryonebirdsMontessori programs will find easily find rare items to complement their classrooms. The blog has some interesting posts, including Do Blackline Masters Stifle Creativity? and Holidays.

Printables: Bees and Hexagons

Decorate Bee HiveI have a pet peeve about being scared of bees, which probably signifies some sort of deep psychological issue. Analysis will be saved for another day; today I want to do a little bee advocacy.

Make yourself a lovely bee hive with some Hexagonal Graph Paper and some yellow paint or crayons. To make storage easier, print two pieces and staple them together to form a pocket.

Next, add Adorable Bees, made even cuter by cutting wings out of vellum.Vellum Wings Attach the wings with a small craft brad and glue the head on top of the brad.

A Little Craft

activityvillagekokeshiHere’s a simple Kokeshi pattern that’s easy to complete.

Carolyn and I are both full of ideas and not afraid to chase them — so a “little” craft project can easily become a tornado.  Last night I suggested we decorate a couple of postcards – but then Carolyn wanted the glitter. 45 minutes later I strolled into the living room and said jokingly, “Sweetie, you should know better than to let me open a tube of glitter….”

Unbeknownst to me, I had turquoise glitter all over my cheek at the time. Unbeknownst to Tom, there was already turquoise glitter all over the new playroom table he had just set up. I love a clean table – it’s such a tremendous opportunity to start something fun.

I think this Kokeshi Doll would look quite fetching with a little extra glitter added, don’t you?

The song of "My Little Ponies" I am going to sing for you. "My Little Ponies, My Little Ponies, It's time for another end." That's all I could think of right now. I think there's more to it. I did this in a sticker page on the computer. My Little Ponies stickers are buried somewhere in Hasbro's Playskool Site.

This box is not just any old box. I was so proud of myself when I got to take a picture of this box. I just carefully lined it - and then, carefully, by going the things to make a picture - I did it! I was so proud of myself.
